Here at Okami Karate Dojo we train an eclectic variant of Goju Karate founded by Chogun Miyagi in the early 1900s. This means we practice traditional moves and forms with modern fighting applications, practical self-defense, grappling, "MMA" style fighting, and weapons. This is what karate has always meant to be, which makes an outstanding and full filling life passion.
Karate has often been nick named "the art of self-defense" for its solid training of basic techniques. It has also been called "the art of striking while grappling" which exemplifies the more advanced close quarter fighting done in the system. We bring use both of these elements to teach and train students.
Our curriculum
We focus extensively on kihon or "basics" including strikes, blocks, kicks, kick defenses, stances, sparring, body movement, fighting postures. This is complimented by pushing hands, stand up grappling, trapping, throwing, takedowns, ground grappling, and other gritty aspects of real fighting. We also balance this with traditional kata, bunkai applications, historical context, culture, linguistics, and structured respect and discipline.
